Opportunities
often come disguised as responsibility, risk, or even inconvenience. Many
people see them and hesitate. Others recognize them and open the door. The
Bible gives us a powerful example of someone who seized an opportunity that
changed his life and his household: Obed-Edom.
The Biblical Background
When King
David attempted to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, a tragic event
occurred. Uzzah touched the Ark irreverently and died (2 Samuel 6:6–7). Fear
spread, and David stopped the procession.
Not
knowing what to do next, David made a decision:
“So David
was unwilling to take the ark of the Lord into the City of David. Instead, he
took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.”
(2 Samuel 6:10, NIV)
What
seemed like a danger to others became an opportunity for
Obed-Edom.
Obed-Edom Opened His House — and His Heart
The Ark
of the Covenant represented:
- The presence of God
- The glory of God
- The holiness of God
Hosting
the Ark was not a small matter. It required:
- Respect
- Reverence
- Responsibility
Yet
Obed-Edom did not refuse.
The Bible
tells us:
“The ark
of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months,
and the Lord blessed him and his entire household.”
(2 Samuel 6:11, NIV)
One decision. One open door. A household blessed.
What Can We Learn from Obed-Edom?
1 Opportunities Often Come with Fear
Others
were afraid of the Ark. Obed-Edom trusted God more than his fear.
Lesson: Do not let fear make you miss
what God wants to do in your life.
2 God’s Presence Brings Blessing
The
blessing was not partial. The Bible says his entire household was
blessed.
Lesson: When we welcome God’s presence,
it affects our family, our work, and our future.
3 Small Windows Can Lead to Great Impact
Three
months were enough to transform Obed-Edom’s story. Later, he became a
gatekeeper and servant in God’s house (1 Chronicles 15:18).
Lesson: Faithfulness in one opportunity
prepares us for greater responsibility.
How About Us Today?
God may
not ask us to host the Ark physically, but He gives us opportunities every day:
- To welcome His presence into
our homes
- To serve in ministry
- To care for children,
family, and others
- To say “yes” when it would
be easier to say “no”
The
question is not “Is this opportunity comfortable?”
The real question is:
“Is God in this?”
Final Reflection
Obed-Edom
teaches us that:
- Opportunity favors the
willing
- God honors open hearts
- Blessings follow obedience
When God
places an opportunity at your door, don’t push it away in fear.
Open your house. Open your heart. Open your life.
Because
where God is welcomed, blessing follows.
